our life … blog style

I’m a very lucky girl.

I happen to have one of the best families in the world. How is that for a bold claim? Having a wonderful family is an easy thing to take for granted, because it’s just how it’s always been for me. I’ve always had great parents and a great brother. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins? They’re all great. And when I got married 10 years ago, I added my in-laws to the list of my fabulous family.

I seriously hit the jackpot when it comes to family.

I could write a post about every single one of my family members, but this one is dedicated to the most important woman in my life – my mom.

My mom recently had a milestone birthday. I know she doesn’t want to dwell on the number, so I won’t mention it, even though one glance at these pictures should answer that question rather quickly. She didn’t want to make a big fuss about it, so we decided we would be good to her and give her exactly what she wanted: a small family party, no different than we do every year.

Even though we agreed to her simple wishes, we still wanted to do something a little special for her. So my brother and I put our heads together to try to come up with something. I remembered pinning this on Pinterest a few months back, and thought how perfect it would be!

And boy, was it perfect.

The emails and letters poured in for 3 weeks, and with each and every one, we got a glimpse into my mom’s life that we never had before. There were funny stories from her childhood from her lifelong friends, there were sweet memories from former co-workers, and there may have been more than one confession about a past crush on my mom.

To say we had a blast reading through these memories would be an understatement.

We stayed up late the night before, getting the envelopes ready.

That’s a lot of envelopes, people!

A good problem to have was figuring out what to do with all of the extra letters. We ended up with 80!

Once every letter was tucked into an envelope, we tied them up.

The only thing better than putting this together was watching our mom read all of them.

I had high hopes for this project, and it did not disappoint. I am so thankful for my mom, and I’m so thankful for all of her friends and our family who took time out of their busy lives to send in their memories and birthday wishes. Thank you for making my mom’s day so special.

Happy birthday, Mom!

Sharilyn, I am so honored to be a part of your blog. The real story here is all the work that you and Dustin did to make my birthday special. I was truly blown away by all of the letters that you received, representing 60 years of memories. (There, I said it!) You are a wonderful daughter, and I count my blessings every day for you.
